Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has a genuine evidence base for a defined list of conditions and a much longer list of promotional claims attached to it. This article separates the two, explains why course length matters more than any single session, and sets out what to check before booking a chamber in Bangkok.
The Physiology Behind Hyperbaric Oxygen
Under normal conditions almost all the oxygen your blood carries is bound to haemoglobin, which is close to fully saturated at sea level. Breathing high concentration oxygen at raised pressure does something different: it dissolves oxygen directly into the plasma, in quantities far beyond what haemoglobin can add. Plasma reaches tissue that red cells struggle to supply, which is why the technique matters in poorly perfused or swollen tissue.
Over a course, repeated exposure is associated with new capillary formation, changes in inflammatory signalling and improved function of white cells in infected tissue. These are cumulative processes, which is the single most important fact for anyone deciding how many sessions to book.
HBOT Benefits and Who They Apply To in Bangkok
| Benefit | Who it typically applies to | Sessions usually involved |
|---|---|---|
| Improved healing in poorly perfused tissue | Slow-healing wounds, post-radiation tissue injury | Twenty to forty |
| Reduced tissue swelling | Selected post-surgical and post-injury cases | Five to fifteen |
| Support for infection control | Specific deep tissue and bone infections, alongside antibiotics | Physician-directed |
| Recovery and energy claims | Wellness users | Variable, weakest evidence tier |
The indication list is examined more fully in our article on hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses, and the session experience itself in what happens during an HBOT session in Bangkok.
Approved Indications Versus Emerging Uses
Hyperbaric medicine societies maintain a list of indications supported by sufficient evidence, including decompression illness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas embolism, certain problem wounds, radiation tissue injury and selected serious infections. For these, hyperbaric oxygen is established treatment delivered in a clinical setting.
Everything outside that list, from post-concussion recovery to longevity programmes, is emerging or exploratory. Some of it is interesting research. None of it is settled, and a clinic that presents the two tiers as equivalent is not giving you an accurate picture.
Why Course Length Determines the Benefit
The effects that persist after you leave the chamber, particularly the growth of new small blood vessels in previously starved tissue, take repeated exposures to develop. This is why wound protocols run for weeks rather than days, and why a single trial session tells you how the chamber feels but very little about whether it helps.
Before starting, agree what will be measured. For a wound that is straightforward. For fatigue or recovery it needs a written baseline, otherwise you are relying on recall several weeks later.
Chamber Standards to Check in Bangkok
- The operating pressure in atmospheres absolute, stated plainly
- Whether the chamber is a clinical hard chamber rather than a soft inflatable unit
- Medical supervision during sessions and a documented emergency protocol
- A physician assessment covering ears, sinuses, lungs and medication before the first dive
- A written plan stating the number of sessions and the indication
At MRC Healthcare, hyperbaric sessions run under medical supervision with a pre-treatment assessment and are documented alongside the rest of your treatment plan.
Fitting a Hyperbaric Course Into a Thailand Stay
Because sessions are usually daily, hyperbaric therapy shapes the length of a medical trip more than most treatments. Visitors from Australia, Singapore and Europe typically plan two to four weeks in Bangkok when a full course is recommended, and shorter stays when it is a supportive addition to another treatment.
Note the flying rule as well: a defined interval between the last session and a flight is standard practice, so book your return with that in mind. See our Thailand medical travel checklist for the wider planning steps.
